Special local conditions require extraordinary solutions for construction container units – such as those used by the company Depenbrock Ingenieurwasserbau for the renovation of the Neumühlen quay wall in Hamburg-Ottensen. The construction site is located right by the Northern Elbe river and is likely to be flooded several times during the storm flood season. That is why we, together with the customer, decided to install the ELA building container units at an appropriately elevated height.

The customer built a substructure consisting of four 20-foot shipping containers and steel girders, which forms an elevated base for the ELA construction container units. “The location of the construction site and the expected flooding placed special demands on the design of the construction container units,” says Christian Buhmann, Project Manager for General and Hydraulic Engineering at Depenbrock. Together with the sales force, an optimal solution was found in a short time. “We are very satisfied with the overall package that was delivered to us by ELA Container,” says Buhmann.

External stairwell containers provide access to the offices and roof terrace.

The ELA construction container unit consists of 12 ELA container cabins. On a total area of 255 m2, they offer space for offices, meeting rooms, lounge and break areas, a kitchen, and restrooms. An interior corridor and five stairwell containers connect the functional areas and the different floors, while large plastic tilt-and-turn windows with insulating glass combined with bright interior design provide a pleasant atmosphere and a generous sense of space.

Air conditioning and electric heaters ensure the temperature remains comfortable throughout the year. Smoke detectors and shutters are used for safety. Outside, three ELA terrace platforms with surrounding railings form a roof terrace of around 45 m2 for time spent outdoors.

ELA supplied the furniture – such as that shown here in one of the offices – directly to the customer, ready for use.
Large windows, bright walls and floors, and modern LED lighting create a pleasant work environment.

The turnkey system, which was transported to the construction site by an ELA truck with a loading crane, also includes furniture such as tables, chairs, filing cabinets, mobile containers, and double lockers. The technical equipment also features refrigerators, a kitchenette, and no shortage of cable runs.

In cooperation with our customer, we were once again able to develop the ideal spatial solution for the special requirements of this construction site.

Depenbrock Ingenieurwasserbau has leased the ELA construction container unit for about two years. The area of the Neumühlen Westkai quay wall being renovated is located in the Ottensen district of Hamburg. The quay wall secures the area where the terrain changes between the promenade along what is known as Hamburg’s Perlenkette (pearl necklace) from Övelgönne to Altona Fischmarkt and the tidal Northern Elbe river.
