Biochemicals GmbH is building a globally unique biorefinery for the production of sustainable biochemicals in Leuna in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Produced from the beechwood of sustainable forestry, the basic chemicals replace fossil components in the production of plastics, resins, adhesives and washing detergents and thus help to counteract climate change. The system launch is scheduled for the end of 2023, with production kicking off in 2024.
Initially housed in an ELA Container mobile room system for five years, UPM quality assurance will support development and start-up of the biorefinery. The two-storey system comprises 60 extra-wide ELA premium containers and two freezer containers, offering usable space of around 1,100 m². There’s space inside for laboratories as well as for office spaces, meeting rooms, lounges with fitted kitchen, changing rooms, sanitary facilities and WCs. There’s also a storage space and technology rooms.
“The laboratories in the ELA room system will play a central role in the commissioning and the ongoing further development of our biorefinery,” explains Dr Konrad Gebauer, Head of Pro-cess Development at UPM Biochemicals, Leuna. The collaboration with ELA Container made it possible to plan, build and commission state-of-the-art laboratories within just a few months.
One of the unique features of the mobile room solution for UPM Biochemicals is the equipment with modern, high-quality laboratory technology as well as the high ceilings at 2.75 metres. In addition to the white interior, the large plastic windows and LED lighting with a pleasant colour of light, the different flooring designs create an atmosphere of well-being. An experienced ELA team was responsible for development and installation.
“We couldn’t be happier that UPM Biochemicals has entrusted us with their Leuna location,” says ELA project manager Aileen Timmer. Office, changing room and canteen containers have been in use there since 2020.
